Brevard Teams Rank High in State All-sports Standings

Championship appearances meant big points for three Brevard County high schools in the first standings of the year for the FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup.

The program awards points to schools based on their finish in FHSAA sports. A state champion earns 20 points, runner-up 19, etc. Bonus points are awarded for district and regional championships, and points can be deducted for unsportsmanlike behavior.

With a state runner-up volleyball team and a seventh-place girls cross country squad, Merritt Island was second in Class 5A with 58 points at the end of the fall season. Two spots back was Titusville, which produced a girls state champion in bowling and accumulated 37.5 points.

Among 3A private schools, Holy Trinity was a close second to Circle Christian (53-51.5). The Tigers won matching championships in boys and girls cross country.

Viera stood fifth in Class 7A with 38 points. Among 4A public schools, Cocoa was eighth (13 points). Points will be updated following the winter season, and the final points will be announced after the spring season.

Holy Trinity star hits hoops milestone

Keoni Wallington joined an elite group of Holy Trinity boys basketball players this month when he scored his 1,000th point in a road game at Astronaut. Wallington was recognized in a home game against Space Coast last week.

Two teams ranked in coaches poll

Cocoa and Florida Air Academy were ranked among the top boys basketball teams in their classifications in a poll produced by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches and Source Hoops.

Cocoa was ranked third in Class 4A and the Falcons fifth in 3A. The top team in each classification was McArthur in Class 8A, Blanche Ely in 7A, Lake Minneola (6A), Cardinal Gibbons (5A), Godby (4A), Sagemont (3A), Zion Lutheran (2A) and Paxton (1A). The next rankings will be announced in early January.
