Rysheed Hordan Takes Leave for Indefinite Period From St.John’s

Rysheed Jordan’s roller coaster St John’s career took another strange turn Friday night. St. John's point guard Rysheed Jordan is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the basketball program as he deals with personal and family matters in Philadelphia. Jordan, a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard, will not be with the team for Saturday's contest with Butler at Carnesecca Arena.

Jordan is second on the team in scoring averaging 14.0 points to go along with 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game for the Red Storm. Jordan’s absence for a significant period of time would hurt the Red Storm’s NCAA Tournament hopes, shortening an already short bench and taking away coach Steve Lavin’s most explosive talent. Jordan was one of only six players to average double-digit minutes per game.

Jordan, the second-leading scorer for the 15th-ranked Red Storm, is dealing with “personal and family circumstances” in Philadelphia, Coach Steve Lavin said. However multiple sources told The Post his leave of absence is connected in part to disciplinary behavior. His play has been inconsistent. Jordan also was suspended by Lavin for one game for a violation of team rules.

But the loss of Jordan comes at a crucial point of the season for No. 15 St. John’s a program looking to get back into the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2010. The Johnnies are 0-1 in conference following a 78-67 loss to Seton Hall on New Year’s Eve.

Jordan, who has yet to speak to the media since arriving at St John’s because Lavin felt it was in the player’s best interest, had an up-and-down freshman season full of personal tribulations — including the murder of a friend, and his mother and grandmother getting sick — and inconsistent play.
